What is a composite door?

Composite doors are made from a blend of materials such as PVC, wood, insulating foam, and glass reinforced plastic. This mix of materials gives them their unique properties. Here are the key benefits of composite doors:

  1. Security: The strength of composite doors makes them a tough barrier against break-ins.

  2. Durability: These doors can withstand different weather conditions and have a long lifespan.

  3. Insulation: Composite doors are great at keeping your home warm and quiet. They prevent heat from escaping and block out outside noise.

  4. Style: With a huge range of designs and colours, you can find a composite door that matches your home’s look.

In short, composite doors offer a balance of security, durability, insulation, and style, making them a popular choice for many homeowners.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Composite Door

When choosing a composite door, what should you look for? Here are some key factors:

  1. Durability: How long will the door last? A good composite door should be able to withstand different weather conditions and have a long lifespan. For the best overall quality, Rockdoor is a great choice.

  2. Design Variety: Do you want a door that matches your home’s style? Solidor and Endurance Doors offer a wide range of designs and styles. They also offer the most colours, giving you plenty of options to choose from.

  3. Thermal Efficiency: How well does the door keep heat in? A thermally efficient door can help keep your home warm and reduce energy bills. Rockdoor is known for its excellent thermal efficiency.

  4. Security Features: How safe is the door? The best composite doors offer strong security features to protect your home from break-ins. Again, Rockdoor stands out for its security.

  5. Accessories: Looking for doors with the best and widest range of accessories? Solidor and Endurance Doors have got you covered.

  6. Price: Lastly, consider your budget. The three brands - Rockdoor, Solidor, and Endurance Doors - all fall within a similar price range so this should not be a key factor for your decision.

So, what matters most to you? Is it the design, the durability, the thermal efficiency, or the security features? Remember, the best door for you is the one that meets your specific needs and preferences.

Do composite doors warp?

This is a very interesting topic. The short answer is yes, however thats not the full story, as some warp more than others and cause major issues, however there is a particular brand that has a 3mm warp tolerance and does not cause any issues. Lets starts with reason why a composite door may warp:

  1. Excessive Heat or Coldness: Composite doors are designed to withstand a range of temperatures, but extreme heat or cold can potentially cause warping. This is especially true if the door is exposed to direct sunlight for prolonged periods, which can cause the door to expand and contract. Similarly, in extremely cold conditions, the contraction of materials can lead to warping.

  2. Not Lifting the Hooks: Some manufacturers claim that not lifting the hooks when closing the door can lead to warping. I personally have not seen any evidence to substantiate this claim but it is one some popular brands like to use as an excuse.

  3. Moisture (Timber Core): While composite doors are designed to be resistant to moisture, in certain conditions, moisture can still penetrate the door. This is particularly true if the door has a timber core. When timber absorbs moisture, it can expand, leading to warping and swelling.

So now we know some of the reasons why composite doors warp, how bad is it? Well for some manufacturers, specifically the cheaper standard composite doors, it can be so bad you cannot open, close, lock or unlock the door which is far from ideal, this alone is one of the reasons we do not deal with cheaper composite doors.

I have had calls to visit customer’s houses who have had certain brands of timber composite doors fitted by somebody else and their door has warped more than 10mm, making it extremely difficult to lift the hooks to lock the door. This for a customer is a nightmare, and likewise for an installer.

So, with that out of the way, there is only one composite door that I know of that has a bow tolerance of 3mm, and it may warp by about 2mm overall, however, this does not cause the door any problems whatsoever and is something that you would not even notice and is the reason we are 100% confident when we supply and fit them.

Importance of a professional installer and supplier

Just before we delve into the frequently asked questions, it’s crucial to highlight two factors that are often overlooked but are more important than everything we’ve discussed so far:

  1. Finding the Right Supplier

  2. Getting a Professional Installation

The guarantee of your composite door lies with the supplier. It’s them you’ll need to turn to if you have any issues with your door, wether that is an adjustment, or replacement part under warranty. Therefore, it’s essential to choose a supplier with a good track record, positive reviews, and a well-established presence. Remember, if they go out of business, so does your guarantee.

As for the installation, it’s not just about getting the door fitted. It’s about getting it fitted right. A good door fitted badly is, in essence, a bad door. So, find an installer who cares about the small details, someone who is a perfectionist, takes their time, and does not rush the job. This attention to detail will help improve the longevity of your door and ensure you get the most out of your investment.

So, as we move forward, keep these two factors in mind. They could make all the difference in your composite door experience.
